“Sound Waves”

The Sound Waves project is basically a sister of the Tropical Nostalgia (Palms). While I was color layering the palms, I figured out a way to recycle the excess of the navy-blue 2nd layer color by pulling the excess out in order to leave the palms lighter, prepared for more layers, and also to dry faster. I was very intrigued how well the texture lines were picking up and the beautiful soft nature of the navy-indigo color was interpreting water. It became a game of absorption, reflections, and interpretation. Once I realized a pattern was being created, and seeing the papers as a group, it was clear that they looked like a spectrogram (visual representation of frequencies). It reminded me of a recent documentary I saw called “The Loneliest Whale: Search for 52”. It’s based on the search of a 52-hertz whale, that basically has its own dialect while the rest of the whales are mainly between 10-40 hertz. I would love for these pieces to have a home in a marine research center or a music conservatory.

Since my nature is always to push the boundaries one more step, while I was organizing the spectrogram sequence, I did pull some papers that had a slightly different touch to them. Once I grouped them together, 4 stacked columns came alive with very intriguing images: the dress, the jelly fish, the human, and the dog glasses. Who would have thought that from the palms, I ended up with this captivating figures.
